Amazon – Friend or Foe?
Amazon is usually considered an enemy of local businesses but I beg to differ. Local businesses can actually make extra income without spending anything. Think of it this way, Amazon had spent 7.2 Billion U.S.Dollars on advertising in 2016. And you can simply list your products on Amazon and profit from this huge advertising budget. Which other service is going to pay for your advertising?
But it’s not that easy. Is it ever?
There are countless sellers on Amazon and everyone is fighting to show its listing for user’s search. Whoever wins this race will get that “Buy Now” button and get the buyer’s sweet money!
So, it’s tricky but not tough.
Let’s do this step by step.
Even on online shopping platforms like Amazon, we tend to trust other fellow humans. Reviews are the testimonies by other users about your product(s) and if the majority of them vouch for the quality of your product(s) then you’re gold. Even your product is a little bit pricier than other product, you will still make more sales and likely to get buy box from Amazon.
Reviews have medium to high impact on you getting that buy box. Here are some of the well-tested methods of getting more reviews.
- Deliver early and deliver a great product. This is a no-brainer but you will be surprised how many times people do not take this seriously. If you are selling a mobile accessory which is light and fragile, don’t advertise your product as strong and life-lasting. Do not over-promise on your product listing because that will get you ton of negative ratings and reviews.
- You can message your buyers after delivery to remind them about reviews. Amazon lets sellers send messages and you should use this feature. You should prepare a simple template email saying that “Hello, I hope you found our product useful and you are satisfied with it. Please give us a review on Amazon to support us. It will mean a lot to our business. If you have any question or complaint, please contact us …… ” This will increase your reviews by 20-30%.
- You can give your customers some discount offer on next purchase if they give you the review. This will encourage them to post pictures and/or videos of them using your product(s). This type of reviews ranks even more on Amazon.
- You can put a personalized note in the box when you are packing it and it can something like “thank you for choosing our product. If you are happy with our product, please make sure to review us on Amazon. If you have any complaint, please let us know directly.”
When someone searches for a product on Amazon, the request goes through a search engine much like Google. Its amazon’s own search engine called “A9”. A9 index on Amazon’s own pages and it uses title, description, keywords, and images to index all products. So, you have to use your product’s title, description, and images for your benefit. People use product’s name, major features, and even they are associated with to search for it and you can use those words as keywords. For example, someone might just search latest phone model by its name but if you’re selling balloon for kids, you might add birthday balloons or balloons for kids in your listing.
Amazon has tested a lot with images. It had learned that buyers feel best with images on the white background which is clearly visible on the home page of Amazon. You will find every product on the white background. You must take good quality images of your product(s) on a white background. Make sure that you take pictures from all sides so that viewers can see the product from all sides and feel confident about your product and its quality. Normally, you can use a lightbox to take good images of small products but if you are just starting and want to save money on this then you can use this trick that I explained in another blog post to take professional looking images for just 5 rs.

Amazon is NOT an island
Yes, Amazon is a complete marketing solution and yes its boss Jeff Bezos is the richest person in modern history. BUT it’s not an island. While you are selling on Amazon and you are doing everything to please Amazon’s search god, you can still boost your sales by old marketing methods like review sites, social media marketing, PPC (google, facebook, and twitter), and old-time favorite email/SMS marketing. You can even create your own review website, review your product, and post the link to your listing on Amazon. Try every trick in the book to spread the word that you are selling something good on Amazon.
Find your competition
You can always learn from the mistakes but it’s not necessary to make those mistakes yourselves. Find your competitor’s listings on Amazon by simply searching about that product and see what are their doing. If they are doing better than you, then see what type of title they are using and how is their product description.
You can also go through their reviews and focus on their negative reviews. Find out what are the complaints in those negative reviews and solve them in your product/shipping (if you have them). You can keep a close eye on their availability and repricing pattern. If they are out of stock at any given point of time, just lower your prices a bit and rise above. You should use your competition for your benefit.
Don’t be a low-baller
Never fight at low prices. You will eventually land in the loss and your ratings will suffer badly because of it. Buyers will not trust your offer as well.

This is your chance to make some additional sales on smaller items and accessories. Smaller items witness more sales and since they are replaced often, you can sell them to the same customers over and over again.
So, always list these items related to your main item prominently and make additional money.
I saved best for the last. I said at the beginning of this article that reviews are the greatest source of getting more sales on Amazon.
