AI ModeOfficial

Gemini 3.8 Flash ships and lands in AI Mode the same day

Google released Gemini 3.8 Flash three weeks after 3.7 Flash, its third Flash model in six weeks. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers can pick it in AI Mode from the + menu. Free users get no model choice. In the API it costs $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens until 31 December 2026, then doubles.

Why it matters + what to do

The model behind AI Mode now changes on Google’s release calendar. An AI Mode citation test you ran in August may not repeat in September, simply because the model is different.

Do this: Record the model name and the date next to every AI Mode test you run, the same way you record location for rank checks.

Ads policyOfficial

Alcohol ads on YouTube can be personalized from 30 October

Google updated its personalized advertising policy. From 30 October 2026, advertisers can personalize alcohol ads on YouTube inventory where local law allows it. Targeting by alcohol-related health interests stays banned, and minors still see no personalized ads. India, Egypt, Indonesia and Poland are left out of this update for now.

Why it matters + what to do

For campaigns targeting India, nothing changes. Global drinks brands get audience targeting on YouTube for the first time.

Do this: If you run alcohol campaigns for markets outside India, build your audience lists now so they are ready on 30 October.

AI Mode · Google AdsConfirmed test

Exact and phrase match text ads show up in AI Mode

Advertiser Anthony Higman found ordinary Search campaigns with exact and phrase match keywords serving inside AI Mode. Google’s Ads Liaison Ginny Marvin confirmed it the next day as a small experiment, limited to queries with clear and direct intent. Until now, AI Mode ads needed AI Max, Performance Max for Search, or broad match with Smart Bidding.

Why it matters + what to do

Google Ads does not report AI Mode separately from normal Search. Your exact match numbers may now include AI Mode traffic, and there is no way to see how much.

Do this: Compare exact and phrase match CTR and conversion rate before and after early September. A shift with no other cause may be AI Mode.

Business ProfileOfficial

Business Profile “Collected info” tab goes live

Google confirmed the Collected info tab in the Business Profile dashboard. It lists details Google’s automated assistant gathered from your business by call, text or WhatsApp, with the source and the date of each item. You can delete what you do not want kept. It was in testing from June and is still limited to some regions, languages and categories.

Why it matters + what to do

Wrong opening hours or services often come from these automated calls, and until now nobody could see where a change came from. Note one limit: deleting an item removes it from Google’s records but does not undo a change already made to the live profile.

Do this: Open Edit profile, then Collected info, for every profile you manage. Correct the live profile separately.

Merchant CenterOfficial

Merchant Center accepts product reviews through the API

The product reviews help page used to say the API was not supported. It now lists the Merchant API as an upload method, next to scheduled fetch, SFTP and file upload. You still need to be in the Product Ratings program with at least 50 reviews, and API access needs an allowlist request.

Why it matters + what to do

Reviews can now update as they arrive instead of in a monthly XML file. Content API for Shopping was switched off on 18 August 2026, so the Merchant API is the only programmatic route anyway.

Do this: If your product feed already runs through the Merchant API, add reviews to the same integration.

DiscoverOfficial

Discover tests “Dive deeper” AI topic overviews

Google is testing a Dive deeper button in Discover. It opens a short AI-written overview of the topic, with links to related stories, community reactions and original reporting. The test starts on video cards, and Google says it will try several designs in the coming weeks.

Why it matters + what to do

Another AI layer now sits between a Discover card and the publisher’s page. When the overview answers the question, fewer people click through.

Do this: Split your Discover traffic by content type and watch video-led stories from 18 September onward.

Google Ads · MeasurementOfficial

Google Ads multi-source conversions (beta)

You can now connect backend data, such as a CRM or order database, to a Google tag web conversion through Data Manager or the Data Manager API. Google matches tag and backend records by transaction ID. Conversions the tag missed get added, and the backend value replaces the tag value. A new source runs for 14 days in reporting only before it affects bidding.

Why it matters + what to do

This recovers sales lost to ad blockers and browser limits. It can also break your data. If the tag sends 499.00 and your upload sends 49900 in paise, every conversion value is 100 times too high, and Smart Bidding chases it.

Do this: Match currency and units to the tag. Add the source to your existing conversion action. Never put the old and new actions in the same goal, or sales count twice.

GA4Official

GA4 adds hostname Include filters

GA4 data filters can now allow only the hostnames you list, not just exclude bad ones. Events with an empty hostname are blocked as well. Events sent through the Measurement Protocol are not filtered.

Why it matters + what to do

One rule now stops ghost spam that used to need a growing exclude list. The risk is the opposite: any real hit from a domain you forgot, such as a payment page or a subdomain, gets dropped.

Do this: List every domain that sends data. Create the filter in Testing state, compare a week of data, then make it active.

Commerce · AI ModeSpotted

Checkout inside AI Mode switched on by default for Shopify stores

Google emailed Merchant Center users whose Shopify store matched their account: their products are now eligible for native checkout, so shoppers can buy inside AI Mode and Gemini. It is on automatically. Merchants can turn it off in Shopify under Sales channels, then Agentic. Advertiser Menachem Ani shared the email.

Why it matters + what to do

A sale can now close without the shopper ever visiting your store. You lose the visit, the upsell and your own record of that session.

Do this: Make the choice on purpose. If you keep it on, find out how those orders appear in Shopify and Merchant Center before the festive season.

Search ConsoleOfficial

Search Console adds multimodal search data

Search Console’s Performance report and the Generative AI report now have a multimodal search type. It covers searches made with an image: Google Lens, Circle to Search, image uploads to Search and Chrome’s right-click “Search this image”. It is rolling out worldwide.

Why it matters + what to do

For the first time you can see which pages get traffic from camera and image searches. Product, recipe, travel and local business sites should look first.

Do this: Apply the filter, export the data and note which page templates get image-led traffic. That tells you where image quality and alt text pay off.

RankingOfficial

September 2026 spam update

Google started the September 2026 spam update at 9:15 a.m. Pacific on 24 September (9:45 p.m. in India). It applies worldwide and to all languages, and Google said it may take up to two weeks to finish.

Why it matters + what to do

Spam updates hit sites that break Google’s spam policies. If traffic fell between 24 September and early October, check the site against those policies before you look for other causes.

Do this: Add a 24 September annotation in Search Console, and check the Status Dashboard for the completion note before you compare before and after.

Google Ads · AudiencesOfficial

Customer Match now takes IP address and timestamp

The Customer Match upload guide now accepts two more columns: User IP address and User interaction timestamp. Both are sent unhashed. A timestamp cannot be sent without an IP. An IP without a timestamp matches whoever used that address most recently. IP matching does not work for users in the EEA, UK or Switzerland.

Why it matters + what to do

More match keys can raise match rates, especially for customers with no email on file. But an IP tied to a customer is personal data, and these files carry it in plain text.

Do this: Before adding these columns, confirm your privacy notice and consent cover ad matching, including under India’s DPDP Act. Send the timestamp with every IP.

AI ModeOfficial

AI Mode monitoring opens to everyone

Info monitoring in AI Mode was for Pro and Ultra subscribers. Google is now rolling it out to all users worldwide in the Google app. You tell AI Mode what to watch, it keeps checking websites, forums, social posts and the Shopping Graph of more than 60 billion products, and alerts you when something changes. Search will also suggest monitoring tasks while you search.

Why it matters + what to do

Price drops, back-in-stock items and new local openings now reach people as AI alerts. Pages and feeds that change often, like prices and stock, matter more than they did.

Do this: Keep price and availability correct in your product structured data and Merchant Center feed, and keep opening details current on your Business Profile.

PublishersPress report

Google pays about 100 publishers for AI answers

The Information reported that Google pays about 100 publishers when their content shapes answers in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini. The invite-only test, called the AI contribution pilot, was first reported by Digiday on 14 September. Payments appear in Search Console with no page-level breakdown. Several small sites earned under $1,000 across months, and some large publishers declined to join.

Why it matters + what to do

Google is setting its own price for content used in AI answers, and it does not explain the maths. For most sites the amounts are small next to the traffic AI answers take away.

Do this: Export your AI Overview and AI Mode impressions from Search Console’s Generative AI report every month, so you have your own record if an invite or a negotiation comes.

Background: what September adds up to

1. AI Mode gets everything first

In one month AI Mode got a new model on launch day, monitoring for every user, a test of exact and phrase match ads, and checkout for Shopify stores. Classic results and AI Overviews got none of these. Google now builds new features into AI Mode and maintains the rest.

For SEO work this means two habits. Test AI Mode the way you test rankings: fixed queries, fixed location, and the model name written down. And keep the facts Google reads directly, such as prices, stock and opening hours, correct at the source, because monitoring alerts and checkout use them without anyone loading your page.

2. Ad measurement moves to your server

Multi-source conversions, IP matching in Customer Match and the push to Data Manager all point one way. Google wants your backend records, not just browser tag hits. The tag loses data to ad blockers and browser limits. Your order database does not.

The cost is responsibility. Your upload now overrides the tag’s value, so a unit mistake inflates every number Smart Bidding sees. The new Customer Match columns send IP addresses in plain text, and in India that data falls under the DPDP Act. Treat these uploads as a data pipeline with an owner, a test and a consent check, not as a setting someone switches on late on a Friday.

3. Publishers get more AI and a small cheque

Discover now tests AI overviews in front of publisher links, starting with video. In the same month, reports showed Google paying about 100 publishers through an invite-only pilot, at amounts Google decides and does not explain. The only new reporting publishers got was the multimodal filter in Search Console.

If you run a content site, the Generative AI report in Search Console, launched in June, is your only first-party record of how often Google’s AI uses your pages. Export it monthly and keep it next to your Discover numbers.
